The unofficial end of summer - Labor Day Weekend - is quickly approaching. Sun worshippers all over the country, especially in regions with four distinct seasons, are clamoring to make the best of the nearest beach, lake, mountains, pool or BBQ pit.
What’s your favorite thing to do during this holiday weekend?
You may already have your outfit planned - a lace dress, a cover-up over your most flattering bathing suit, or even shorts and a t-shirt. But dressing after Labor Day gets tricky -- as the old saying goes, you shouldn’t wear white after this early September holiday. But summer doesn’t officially end for a few more weeks.
So what are you supposed to wear during this transitional period? And what type of costume jewelry will best complement each outfit?
We have three tips:
Ignore the Rule
Who ever came up with that “no white” rule anyway? If the temperatures are warm, and the sun is shining, be bold and wear white!
This white pullover sweater from Express is perfect for a cool night by the coast. It’s made of a soft cotton blend and has a daring and unexpected scoop back with a feminine tie detail.
How beautifully would our SHIELD ME necklace pair with the pullover? Have you heard of costume jewelry legend Trifari? The vintage brooch at the center of this necklace is from the iconic Trifari brand, which was founded in the early 1900s and has been worn by style icons like Madonna. Other materials include a lightweight plastic chain, contemporary acrylic and metal beads, and Czech and Swarovski crystal.
Start to Mix in Fall’s Jewel Tones
Our PARTY TIME necklace, for example, is a gemmy, vibrant purple. The design incorporates a vintage rhinestone brooch with clear, pink, and opalescent crystals. Other elements are vintage and contemporary lucite and Swarovski crystal. What makes this necklace still appropriate to wear during that transitional period between summer and fall is the touch of playful pink between the juicy grape.
How could you wear this in September? If you feel bold enough to wear hot pink to the office, this Stella McCartney blouse is simply darling without being demure. The 100% silk material means you’ll stay cool, even on those still-hot September days. If you’d rather wear something a little more buttoned-up (literally) and conservative but still feminine and summery, try this JOUR/NE Ribbon Blouse in Baby Pink.
Depend on Denim Layers
Cool mornings and cool nights mean you’ll need something to cover your shoulders. A denim jacket never goes out of style, and a light wash denim can help you transition from sunbleached summer to plunging temperatures.
Do you gravitate to daring, rock-and-roll styles? You need this denim essential in your wardrobe: the Steppe Denim Jacket from Revolve. For a true classic, look at this AG Mya Denim Jacket sold at Anthropologie. Or if you want a surprising, playful look that won’t break the budget, check out this denim jacket with star print - less than $25!
So what accessories would best complement these blues?
Red and denim are a classic, patriotic pairing. Consider our candy-apple-red DECO FLING necklace, which features a vintage brooch, Lucite, contemporary resin, Czech crystal, and Swarovski crystal.
Or, for a more literal interpretation, stick to the blue hues, which will also help you transition to the jewel tones mentioned above. Even better? Sapphire is the birthstone of September. Our ROYALTY necklace is a royal blue with metallic gold accents. It features Vintage findings, reticulated quartz, freshwater pearls and vintage crystal.
Now that you have some ideas for transitional summer-to-fall dressing, which strategy will you try first?
